Woman arrested after 30-year-old father-of-two stabbed to death at home in New Oak, Co Carlow

A father-of-two who died after being stabbed at a house in Carlow last night suffered serious knife wounds to his leg.

A woman known to the victim remains in custody this afternoon after being detained by armed police overnight.

Shortly before midnight, a 30-year-old man was found unconscious in a house in the New Oak housing estate.

He is believed to have suffered knife wounds, including to his leg, and was taken to St. Stephen’s General Hospital. Luke in Kilkenny, where he soon died.

In a further operation, members of the Garda Armed Support Unit carried out a search in Carlow Town and arrested a woman in connection with a fatal stabbing.

The Irish Independent understands the woman is known to the victim.

She is currently being held at Carlow Police Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and may be questioned for a maximum of 24 hours.

Residents of the New Oak estate were shocked by today’s news.

“It’s so sad. This news depresses the whole area,” he told his Irish neighbor, the Irish Independent.

“I knew a young boy who died while I was caring for him as a child. He was a good, great guy.

“He has two little children, so it’s even more sad. It’s shocking when you open the curtains in the morning and see police cars everywhere and tape everywhere. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.”

Another neighbor said: “It’s a very quiet community. There’s nothing really going on here. It’s a shock, really a shock. The waste of a young life.

“I didn’t know the man very well, but he seemed alright, always said hello to you.”

In a statement, a Garda spokesman said: “The local coroner has been notified and the services of the Garda Technical Office and State Pathologist have been requested. A senior investigating officer (SIO) was appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room was established at Carlow Garda Station. A family liaison officer (FLO) has also been appointed to support the family.

“The scene of the incident was secured for forensic and technical examinations, and an autopsy was also organized.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are also looking for anyone with camera footage, including dash cam footage, from road users on the New Oak Estate and nearby areas at the time of the incident.”
