Director of Smash Bros. I’ve been working on a new game for two years

Whatever he’s saying, it doesn’t really sound like Smash Bros. (Nintendo)

Masahiro Sakurai revealed that he has been working on a new game since 2022, raising hopes for a new Smash Bros. game. Nintendo Switch 2 premiere.

When it comes to Nintendo, it’s best not to take anything for granted, but at this point it would be a surprise if their next console didn’t look largely the same as the Nintendo Switch – especially after recent leaks suggested exactly that.

It would also be surprising if the main launch game wasn’t a Super Mario title, as there hasn’t been one in ages and numerous leaks have suggested some sort of Donkey Kong-style crossover.

Other than that (and the odd online game they’re currently testing on the original Switch), absolutely nothing is known about the new console… except that there’s currently a good chance it will host a new Masahiro Sakurai game.

There’s no point beating around the bush, Masahiro Sakurai is a weird guy. He is 54 years old but looks 24 and was so devoted to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that he started working with a drip connected to his arm.

Even though he is a workaholic, he constantly talks about retiring and almost every Super Smash Bros. game. describes it as the last one, with no chance for another one.

He seemed to have been semi-retired since working on Ultimate ended in late 2021, but he has now revealed that he started working on the new game almost immediately.

Sakurai made the announcement just after concluding his long-running YouTube series on game development, stating that he had developed a 2021 game proposal for Nintendo, which was quickly greenlit.

Apparently, in the meantime, he started running a YouTube channel (which he spent almost half a million pounds of his own money on) because it took a long time to put together the development team he needed.

“I’m sorry I can’t say more about this project, but assuming we manage to get it done, we should announce it sooner or later,” he said.

Naturally, most fans assume this is a new Super Smash Bros. game, but if you take Sakurai’s comments at face value, it doesn’t really sound like it.

It will be Nintendo who will beg him to make a new one, not him who will have to convince them with a written proposal. You can also assume that he already knew the people he would need to create the next game, while he suggests that his new game needs more unknown talent.

It’s probably best not to read too much into his intentionally ambiguous comments, but unless it’s Smash Bros., it could literally be anything.

He worked on a number of Kirby spin-off games early in his career, as well as the puzzle game Meteos and the 3DS game Kid Icarus: Uprising (which was occasionally whispered about a remaster), but nothing that indicated his next move would be .

Which means we’re back to knowing virtually nothing about the Nintendo Switch 2 and its games…
