Lansing inmate found guilty of attacking prison guard

LANSING, Kan. (KCTV) – A Lansing County Jail inmate could face more time behind bars after he was found guilty of attacking a prison guard.

The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office reports that on Monday, October 21, Justin D. Pierce, 41, an inmate of the Lansing Correctional Facility, was found guilty of assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Court documents say Pierce injured a correctional officer during a prison riot on January 8, 2023. During the argument, Pierce approached the officer. Pierce turned around as if to go back to his cell, but ignored it and walked up to the officer’s station.

Court officials noted that Pierce then began punching the officer, who suffered bruises to his legs and torso. Pierce was charged with two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, but was found guilty of only one count.

“Corrections officers face adversity and danger every day they go to work,” said Todd Thompson, Leavenworth County prosecutor. “Regardless of the risks, these men continue to serve proudly and I admire them for that.”

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for December 6, 2024. No further information has been released.
