Woman rescued after 7 hours of being trapped between boulders

An Australian ambulance service had to rescue a woman who “got into trouble earlier this month” when she got stuck between two boulders while trying to retrieve her dropped mobile phone. Matilda Campbell slipped into a 10-foot-deep crevasse in the regional Hunter Valley and spent about seven hours stuck between massive rocks before rescuers finally freed her with only cuts and scratches, officials said.

On Monday, the New South Wales Ambulance Service released photos and details of the rescue, explaining that Campbell’s friends called the emergency services “after unsuccessful attempts to free her” while she was suspended “hanging by her legs upside down for over an hour.”

A specialist paramedic “worked with a multi-disciplinary team to remove several heavy boulders to create a safe access point” to the trapped woman, and the team then built a wooden frame “to provide stability while paramedics worked.”

The team had to use a mechanical winch to move the huge 1,100-pound boulder.

“In 10 years of working as a paramedic, I have never encountered such work. It was challenging but extremely rewarding,” said paramedic specialist Peter Watts, according to a statement from the ambulance service. “Each agency had a role and we all worked together extremely well to achieve a good outcome for the patient.”

In her social media posts after the incident, Campbell stated that she was “the most accident-prone person in history” and added that she would refrain from exploring rock formations, at least for a while.

“I wanted to say my sincerest thanks to my friends, the team that worked so hard to get me out,” she wrote in another post, adding that she was “forever grateful” to everyone involved in freeing her from the rocks.

NSW Ambulance noted in its statement that Campbell was never able to recover her phone.
