POINT PLEASANT, Va. (WSAZ) – Over the weekend, Point Pleasant police were notified of someone using the “Almost Heaven” swing set at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park.

Point Pleasant residents say they are frustrated because the swing set is an important part of the community.

“It was very wrong that someone would do this to memorialize people, and it’s just sad that they took it upon themselves to take it down,” Brandi McGuire said.

“Well, it’s sad that people have to steal stuff like that. We have a hundred of them in the state and it’s quite an important element for our city,” said resident David Sider.

Investigators say they found the swing set in a field near a flood gate. The swing is back in its rightful place, but people kind of want to know who took it and why.

The change to Tu-Endie-Wei State Park was made by Nicholas Cunty students, and Main Street Principal Chris Rizer says the change has increased visitation by 60 percent.

“I’m just very happy that he was found and that he’s back where he belongs,” Rizer said.

“So we’re very happy that we have him and that he’ll still be there,” McGuire said.

Department of Natural Resources Superintendent Clark Sanford said swings are very important at any historic site.

“Everyone tells you that in life you should stop and smell the roses and stop and use the swing. It will rekindle the wonder that you have for life,” Sanford said.

The swing is one of more than two dozen that West Virginians have created for everyone across the state.

“It’s not just a photo opportunity,” Sanford said. “It’s just another way to elevate our guests’ experience and interaction with state parks and what makes West Virginia wild and wonderful.”

The swing was installed earlier this year. Police have not released the suspect’s name and anyone with information is asked to contact Point Pleasant police.
