As the old saying goes: “Time is our greatest asset.” For Aldis Hodge, this statement rings truer than most, and the self-taught horologist learned the importance of time at a very early age. Inspired by his older sibling Edwin, he decided early on that he wanted to become an actor, which was the first step on his long and successful journey as an artist.

Hodge says about his passion for art: “I have had this feeling since childhood. My brother, when he was 3, said he wanted to be in the box that was the TV. So when my mother started supporting him in this, I immediately got involved in this business, trying to be like my brother. It was part of our lives. This is what we chose.” As seamless as Hodge’s entry into the entertainment industry may have been, it was all made possible by his mother’s influence. While serving in the United States Marine Corps, the family matriarch instilled in her children a necessary sense of structure, which Hodge says was crucial during his adolescence.

“We were raised with the discipline of a Marine,” says the award-winning actor. “With the flair, acumen and skill of a Marine navigating the world.” His parents met in Okinawa, Japan, where they were stationed at the time. His mother was so impressed by the unique parenting methods of Japanese culture that she adopted many of them in raising her boys. For example, several artistic activities dominated the family home, but knowledge was of the utmost importance. “Acting was a privilege, but education was the priority,” Hodge says.

What was once just an interest in being “in the box” turned into a thriving acting career. Hodge’s adventure in film and television began over thirty years ago with a recurring role in the cult series Sesame Streetfollowed by a performance in Die hard with a vengeancenext to his brother. He gained wide recognition in 2008 as Alec Hardison on TNT Influenceand his popularity continued once he was cast Black Adam AND Underground. Since then, he has given outstanding performances and shown his versatility in films such as Sstraight from Compton, Hidden figures AND One night in Miami. But Hodge’s film accolades only scratch the surface of his immense talent.

The ability to maintain balance was key to Hodge’s success in a variety of endeavors, from writing and painting to playing the violin. As an artist and visionary, he simply does not accept limitations. While his on-screen talent is the most visible aspect of his work, it doesn’t do justice to the extent of his strengths. He is determined to never limit himself to any single craft or skill and constantly pushes the boundaries of what he can achieve creatively.

“Acting is one of what I choose to do in life, but it doesn’t define everything,” Hodge says. “It’s a good channel for other ventures I’m involved in because I’m a multi-family entrepreneur. I am the owner of various companies from various business sectors. Acting is what is most present in my profile, but for me it has always been about entrepreneurship and creativity.

Away from the screen, this entrepreneurial creativity found expression in watchmaking practice. Hodge’s fascination with building watches began while studying at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. At the age of 18, he sketched his first watch, a wooden wristwatch. Although initially focused on architecture, Hodge’s curiosity led him to explore watchmaking on his own, captivated by its precision and technical skill. The profession offered the perfect blend of the architectural principles he loved – such as engineering, composition and science – manifested in a passion for watch design that he has nurtured ever since.

Hodge’s involvement in the industry is also important because of what he represents. As one of the few Black people in the field, he calls attention to the lack of representation in watchmaking, a field that has historically failed to recognize Black contributions. He often references Benjamin Banneker, a prominent black horologist of the 18th century, as a symbol of black ingenuity. He points out that despite systemic barriers, black people have long been pioneers in science and technology. Today, it is no surprise to see Black watchmakers in the industry as they continue to build on a legacy of excellence and creativity.

“When you approach the idea of viewing Black culture, understand that intellect, intelligence, education and brilliance are normal, natural parts of our culture and we have contributed all of that genius over many years,” Hodge notes. “So don’t be surprised to see me in this place because I’m black. It’s a bit offensive. Instead, be surprised what new innovations I create, because I am a watchmaker, I am a watch designer. But don’t be surprised when you see me, because I’m black. You should to expect see that I am black.”

Now Hodge stars in the title role in the film PassAmazon Prime’s upcoming crime thriller based on the book series of the same name. The series centers on Alex Cross, an astute detective and forensic psychologist who is deeply devoted to his family but also consumed by his work. The 38-year-old brings a powerful presence to the role, capturing the complexity of a man torn between his responsibilities as a parent and his pursuit of justice.

The actor takes part in a casting Pass— a project on which he also serves as a producer — is a full-circle moment rooted in a long-standing relationship with the show’s creator, Ben Watkins. They met while playing basketball, and Watkins later noticed Hodge’s talent. Watkins admired how Hodge and his brother, raised by their mother with strong values, had navigated the industry. When the opportunity to host the series arose, Hodge’s integrity and work ethic made him the perfect fit for the role, giving him the chance to combine personal and professional elements at a defining moment in his career.

What’s most intriguing about Hodge’s role in Pass fatherhood is so central to his character, something the actor relates to on a deeper level. As a young father, the artist identified with him in many scenes in the series. His portrayal of Alex Cross reflects his own path. He reveals that his daughter is his “Alpha, Omega – everything to me” and having her in his life has changed his priorities. “Whatever work I do has to support or complement the future I’m trying to build for it,” he explains.

“Being there as often as possible has a different impact on me, I let my daughter know that I’m here because it’s not just for her but for me as well,” she states. “It feeds me. This is what drives me. This is what wakes me up in the morning. This is really what makes me say: OK, life is worth living. This is what redefines love.” Indeed, when it comes to Hodge’s little girl, everything else seems secondary. “You can give me 15 Oscars now and ask me what moment I’m most proud of and happiest – it will always be related to my daughter.”

Finding balance was a constant challenge for the star Marmalade, a romantic heist movie that was released earlier this year. But it’s a challenge Hodge meets with intention. “Having a great partner helps a lot,” she says, emphasizing spousal support. “Because I have to be very specific about my time and where I spend it and where I don’t spend it.” With a dedicated team and an organized schedule, Hodge ensures that your hours are thoughtfully allocated, both at work and in your personal life. As a dad, actor and entrepreneur, he constantly adapts his lifestyle to focus on what matters most.

“My wife is here and she’s helping me figure out how to be as present as possible when I’m not physically there,” the artist says. “My mom, my sister, my brother, everyone pitched in to really make sure that the unit was strong and that my little mom knew she was loved, knew her family and understood what family was.”

Ultimately, Hodge’s appreciation of time goes far beyond watchmaking – it’s about knowing where and how to invest it. Learning how to balance your professional and creative aspirations while putting your family first shows that success is measured not only by achievements, but also by time spent with those you love. His ability to fulfill multiple roles while remaining grounded is a testament to his character and commitment to finding harmony in all aspects of life.
