Cat’s distribution system manages a “family reunion” by summoning new homeless people

A couple’s decision to adopt two stray cats who mysteriously arrived at a relative’s home a year after adopting another stray kitten from the same place melted the hearts of viewers online.

A post published on October 17 by u/wheelymcfeeee described a strange incident outside his mother’s house, where two friendly cats appeared to have staged their own upbringing.

“I heard a cat meowing, so I turned on the flashlight and looked under her porch,” said a man who already had three cats and a dog with his girlfriend Newsweek.

The post has been upvoted over 20,000 times and has received over 330 comments.

Stray cats are sitting in the rescuer's house
Two stray cats rescued by a Reddit user are sitting in his house. The man spoke to Newsweek about the viral attention his story has attracted:

This place had sentimental value because it was the same place where he had rescued a kitten, now their cat Penny, two years ago.

There was no cat under the porch, but to his surprise a cat came running from between the trees, meowing loudly. This playful kitty was soon joined by another equally noisy cat from the same direction.

“This is the same place we rescued a kitten from two years ago, so there’s a chance that (the cat distribution system) has called some sort of family reunion,” joked u/wheelymcfeely, who would rather keep his real identity a secret, in the post.

The cat distribution system refers to the popular, tongue-in-cheek concept that the universe chooses a cat for you when you are ready, in this case several cats

“At this point we just accepted the fact that a very hungry cat had tricked us into bringing both him and his brother or friend,” he said. “Almost immediately after we invited them inside and had a little quarantine in our bathroom for them, they relaxed and seemed to enjoy their new, comfortable surroundings.”

After talking to their girlfriend, the couple decided to take care of the friendly cats.

“We thought the first one to show up was a female in heat until we took a closer look at her,” he added.

Despite the initial plan to only adopt one cat, they adopted both cats. The pair have since found a new home with a Reddit user and have been named Mac and Charlie, after the characters played by Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney in It’s always sunny in Philadelphia.

Viewers on Reddit were treated to photos of the two cats together, safe and sound in the man’s home, after being greeted a few hours later.

Taking care of Mac and Charlie wasn’t without its challenges; the couple embarked on an extensive veterinary examination, including tick removal and a flea bath. The man remembers that he initially removed at least 20 ticks from the cats, but was relieved to find that both were relatively healthy underneath.

“If there is one thing I can raise awareness about with my post, it would be for people to know if they have a local trap spay/neuter program and if they feed local feral cats,” he said. “Boys like the ones we welcomed into our lives would make the feral cat situation even worse if they were left in the wild!”

The man said that although it is not common to keep cats outside in his area, people leave food for feral cats. He had previously found a cat that had three litters under her mother’s porch and had to trap her so he could sterilize her and adopt her.

“We suspect the boys in my post are from the third litter, which means they are brothers to our second cat, if that’s true,” he said.

Since posting his story online, the man has had his cats checked by a vet to make sure they are no longer microchipped in case they escape. Despite hopes that he would be able to help the cats, not everyone appreciated his efforts.

“I found such a popular post interesting and it was fun talking to so many people, but the occasional accusations of lying for attention or that we stole other people’s cats came up to remind me what the Internet can be like,” he said: ” I did everything in my power to endure my five minutes of attention on Reddit!”
