Stephan Sterns Accused of Secretly Taking Nude Photos of His Roommate, As Revealed in Newly Released Footage

Kissimmee police have released new information as part of their ongoing investigation into the murder of Madeline “Maddie” Soto, who authorities say was murdered by Stephan Sterns.

During interviews conducted shortly after Maddie was reported missing, police spoke with Angelica Negro, Maddie’s roommate, and her mother, Jenn Soto. Her answers were given in Spanish and translated by a detective.

According to police, Sterns allegedly placed a hidden camera under the Black man’s door and secretly took nude photos of her. Recordings of her interviews with detectives reveal the moment she learned of Sterns’ actions and how it changed her perception of him.

The black man lived with Jenn and Maddie Soto, and Sterns sometimes stayed with them. When detectives asked if Sterns was sleeping alone with his girlfriend’s 13-year-old daughter, Maddie, Negro confirmed that she had witnessed it, explaining that they had a father-daughter relationship.

The night before Maddie was reported missing, Negro recalled hearing something coming from Sterns’ room and continuing until he fell asleep. She also noticed that Sterns was acting unusually.

“She noticed something strange about him because of the way he was moving around the house,” she said. The Negro also saw three tools on the table, one of which was a hammer. Sterns also washed clothes – something she claimed he never did.

The negro didn’t recognize the other tools, but he mentioned hearing something the next morning that caught her attention.

“On Monday morning, she heard what sounded like a power tool in the house,” she told detectives. When Jenn Soto asked Sterns about the tools, he replied that he was “finishing a project,” although he did not specify what the project was.

Later in the interview, detectives told Negro that they had found nude photos of her on Sterns’ phone, allegedly taken without her knowledge. When asked to confirm whether the photos were of her, she hesitated and the detective noted, “I believe so.”

Reflecting on the discovery, Negro admitted that her view of Sterns had changed.

“Before she saw these photos, she couldn’t believe he could do anything or hurt Maddie. Now that she saw these photos, of course he is capable of anything,” the detective translated.

Police have not yet charged Sterns for illegally recording his roommate.
