Junior Honorary Rangers of the Lowveld on a roll

SANParks Lowveld Junior Honorary Rangers have been quite busy lately.

As the year begins to come to an end, they show no signs of slowing down and keep their itinerary fully packed. They were recently spoiled with amazing experiences. In September they had the opportunity to spend a weekend in the Kruger National Park, which was a long-awaited treat for everyone.

During this time, they helped with an awareness campaign for the Skukuza Kindergarten, planted many trees, conducted a litter patrol at the Skukuza Recreation Camp and visited the K9 anti-poaching unit and a rhinoceros boma, and still had time to play and support the Springboks at the Selati train station in Skukuza.

It was a great opportunity for both children and coordinators to bond after a successful year so far. “It was amazing to see so many teenagers uninterested in cell phones throughout the weekend. It’s a rare sight these days and proof of the joy of being active!” – said Chris Daniel, coordinator of the Lowveld Junior Honorary Rangers.

Recently, juniors took part in an ornithology and birdwatching event at the Lowveld National Botanic Gardens. On this occasion, they were fortunate to have professional Lowveld bird guide René Rossouw guide and assist them with bird identification techniques and the opportunities this industry holds for their future.

Rossouw’s knowledge of birds, calls and everything that goes into this pastime was truly extraordinary and although the information provided was limited to a basic level, it was still very insightful and an eye opener for all involved.

Daniel thanked everyone who took part and provided opportunities for the Young Honorary Rangers.

“We would especially like to thank program sponsors Citybug, BUCO Nelspruit, Crossing SUPERSPAR and the SANParks Honorary Ranger volunteers who give up their time to make these events a reality for our future conservationists,” he said.
