An exhausted horse stuck in a river in Offaly for 24 hours, rescued by local volunteers

An exhausted horse that was stuck in a river in Offaly for around 24 hours has been rescued by the ISPCA

The ISPCA was recently alerted by a member of the public to a horse that was stuck in a river in Co. Offaly.

Upon arrival, ISPCA Inspector Jimmy McCormack found the horse submerged in the river, with its head barely above the water. The horse was believed to have been in the river for approximately 24 hours, clearly exhausted from unsuccessful attempts to get out.

Inspector McCormack was concerned that the horse, which had been in the water for some time, may have been suffering from hypothermia and could have gone into shock as a result and potentially drowned in the river. So time was of the essence.

An urgent call was made and local animal protection volunteers with a tractor and muscle arrived to help. Together the team was able get the horse out of a dangerous situation.

The horse’s owner was located a short time later and arrived at the scene with a local veterinarian to assess the horse and ensure it was fit for travel.

The next morning there was a follow-up visit to check the horse’s condition after such a dramatic rescue. Fortunately, it was a great result and it’s nice to see him well on his way to a full recovery, tucked under a comfy rug in a nice, warm stable.

The ISPCA would like to thank the many volunteers and MLHR who raised the alarm and came to help. Without their help, the outcome might not have been as good for this horse.
