For the second time in five days, two cars collided at Cannon and Columbia on Thursday morning

The accident occurred just after 9 a.m. at the West Ward intersection.

For the second time in five days, a two-car accident blocked traffic at Cannon and Columbia Avenues in Lansdale’s West Ward shortly after school started Thursday morning, making the intersection one of the most dangerous in the city.

“Two?” replied a Columbia Avenue resident who did not want to give his name when asked about the frequency of accidents at the intersection on an annual basis. “Try five to ten. Every year.”

Kathleen Allebach – whose yard was the scene of a near-miss when an SUV crashed into her front railing and flower bed on Saturday afternoon – confirmed that there were at least 10 on average.

Lansdale Police were dispatched at 9:09 a.m. to a crash involving injuries at an intersection. One passenger was transported with non-life-threatening injuries via VMSC EMS to Grand View Hospital. According to a news release from Montgomery County, the second patient refused transport.

A gray Toyota and a white Hyundai came face to face at the intersection, with the former suffering serious damage to the front passenger side and the latter to the front left driver’s side.

Police said both vehicles were in opposite lanes of Cannon Avenue when the driver of the Toyota turned left onto Columbia Avenue, following the Hyundai.

Cannon Avenue was closed between Derstine and Cannon avenues. At 9:30 the failure was removed

“No one goes 25 miles an hour on this street,” said a Columbia Avenue resident. “Derstine has a four-way stop and York has a school, so people use Columbia as a racetrack.”
