Carl Rackemann’s nephew charged with murder after cricket star’s sister dies in hospital

Queensland Police have announced the alleged murder of former Australian cricketer Carl Rackemann by his son at his sister’s home in Brisbane.

Carl Rackemann is a former fast bowler who appeared in 12 tests for Australia and coached the Zimbabwe national team in a 17-year career that began in 1979.

His sister Suzy, 61, suffered serious head injuries during the alleged attack on the house in Upper Kedron at around 5.45am on August 17.

Mrs Rackemann died in hospital nine days later.

Her son, Conor Robert Rackemann, 29, was initially charged with domestic violence causing grievous bodily harm.

But police have now announced that the charge has been upgraded to a murder domestic violence offence.

‘Following extensive investigations by the Ferny Grove Criminal Investigation Branch, including the newly formed DFV team, his charge has been upgraded to a domestic violence offense of murder,’ a police spokesman said.

Ms Rackemann was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition following the alleged attack but died from her injuries on August 26.

The Queensland Cricket Association expressed its condolences to the Rackemann family following the tragedy.

“The Bulls Masters extends our deepest condolences to the Rackemann family who are suffering a great loss,” the association said on social media.

‘Carl’s sister Suzy passed away last week and it is a loss felt by everyone who knew him.

‘The entire Bulls Masters community stands with our brother Carl in his difficult times.’

Ms Rackemann was bid farewell at a funeral on September 12, followed by a reception at the Queensland Cricketers’ Club.

His son’s case was heard briefly in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court on Friday and the case was adjourned until November 4.

Rackemann did not appear in court and was arrested.
