Review of the 49ers special teams during Bye Week

The 49ers have this week off, so let’s rate them position by position based solely on what they’ve done this season. So far we have given a grade the quarterback, the running backs, the wide receivers, the tight ends, the offensive linemen, the defensive linemen, the linebackers And the defensive backs.

POSITION: Special teams

NAMES: Jake Moody, Eric Wright, Anders Carlsen, Mitch Wishnowsky, Jacob Cowing, Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor Jr.

FIGURE: F

NOTES: This group is terrible across the board. They don’t do anything right. They gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown. They figured out a kick return. They muffed a punt. They have given up several long punt returns. They blocked a punt. They gave up a fake punt that resulted in a first down. Two kickers were injured. Their current kicker, Anders Carlsen, has struggled to kick the ball into the end zone on kickoffs, exacerbating the 49ers’ coverage issues.

The 49ers special teams issues have gotten so bad that it will be a surprise if they don’t do something that could potentially lose the game for the 49ers.

Firing special teams coordinator Brian Schneider during the season probably wouldn’t solve the problem, but they will have to fire him after the season if he doesn’t turn things around soon. To his credit, the special teams didn’t do anything terrible against the Cowboys last Sunday. Let’s see if they can keep up a good cause.
