New Godzilla movie announced with Takashi Yamazaki, director of Godzilla Minus One

It happens. After the great success of Godzilla Minus one at the box office, among fans and criticsand becoming the only King of the Monsters to win an Academy Award, many wondered if there would ever be a sequel. Fortunately, we have good news for you. Toho has announced that a new sequel is in the works that will not only bring back this version of the lizard king, but also bring back now legendary director Takashi Yamazaki to help weave this new story.

If you were a witness Godzilla Minus oneyou could see how a sequel was already set up thanks to the film’s final moments. On one side of the equation, Godzilla may have been blown to pieces by those who banded together to fight his path of destruction, but the pieces that remained floating in the sea still pulsed with energy. This means the lizard king Minus one iteration could have a healing factor far greater than other iterations of Godzilla we’ve seen over the years. On top of this scene, viewers also witnessed the character Noriko survive a previous Godzilla attack on Japan. While the female protagonist may still be alive, the markings on her person have left many kaiju fans wondering if Noriko might have a mysterious new link to the King of the Monsters.

The Minus One Sequel

Since winning an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at this year’s Academy Awards, Godzilla Minus one receiving a sequel seemed like only a matter of time, even without taking into account its box office supremacy. Toho International confirmed that production will begin on the upcoming sequel, although details about the story of Godzilla’s return remain a mystery. Following the film’s initial release, Yamazaki himself stated that he would like to return for a sequel.

In previous interviews, the director has hinted at adding some Kaiju enemies to his Godzilla. Chatting with Empire Magazine earlier this yearYamazaki stated that main character Koichi Shikishima might be making a comeback and that while he might have found peace in the first appearance, it might be the “calm before the storm.” “I know the Shikishima War seems to be over, and we have reached this state of peace and tranquility – but maybe it is the calm before the storm.”

Does the past hint at the future?

We have already written a lot about it Godzilla Minus one in the past and an important aspect of those descriptions is how the film mirrors the original Godzilla film released in the 1950s. Should the sequel follow this trend of paying tribute to the past, could it possibly follow the story of Godzilla Raids Again? For those who don’t know, Godzilla Raids Again was the second film to star the king of the monsters and pitted him against another gigantic beast.

Anguirus may not be as popular as King Ghidorah, Rodan, Mothra or King Kong, but the gargantuan beast was more than a match for Godzilla in their first confrontation. If Yamazaki wants to stay true to the roots of the Kaiju universe, perhaps this beast will be the antagonist to continue the “Minus One” franchise. Of course, there are plenty of other kaiju to choose from, should the director decide to go a different route.
