Repeat sex offender found guilty for third time in federal child exploitation case

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – A South Jordan man was found guilty Monday of possessing child pornography, his third such conviction.

Daniel David Egli, 50, was found guilty of possessing such material by a federal grand jury on Monday, November 4. Egli was convicted twice before, once in 2004 and again in 2010 U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.

According to the evidence presented at trial, Egli violated his conditions of supervised release and possessed pornographic material, leading to the June 2022 federal indictment.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said authorities found an unauthorized laptop and phone during a routine check with his probation officer and seized the devices from the home.

An arrest warrant was issued for Egli in May 2021 and a search of his residence revealed more unauthorized devices in his home.

“Further review by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Intermountain West Regional Computer Forensic Lab of the electronic evidence revealed that Egli accessed, viewed and possessed nearly 500 images of child sexual abuse material, leading to the June 2022 federal indictment, the US Attorney’s Office said.

This case was one of many that were part of “Project Safe Childhood,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The project is part of what the Public Prosecution Service says is “a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, which was launched by the Ministry of Justice in May 2006.”

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Egli’s sentencing is scheduled for February 27, 2025, at 1:00 PM in Salt Lake City.
