SHOP LIFT – A young man from Dalaguete, a city in southern Cebu, was arrested for shoplifting meat worth P7,000.

Shoplifting is the taking of goods from a store without paying for them. It involves concealing items, usually with the intention of leaving the store unnoticed. It is considered a form of theft and can lead to legal consequences such as fines or even imprisonment, depending on the value of the stolen items and local laws.

Recently, a 23-year-old man identified as Jhon Rey Marcellana Hernal was arrested for attempting to shoplift more than ₱7,000 worth of pork and chicken at a mall in Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City. The incident took place on October 23, 2024.

Hernal was caught by mall security after trying to leave without paying. The incident draws attention because of the large amount of meat involved.

According to reports, Hernal, who is currently unemployed and has a high school diploma, packed several kilos of pork and chicken in eco-bags. After collecting the items, he reportedly passed the cash registers and made his way to the store’s exit.

The mall security guard observed his actions and detained him before he could leave the premises. Hernal was then handed over to local authorities for further investigation and processing.

The total amount of shoplifting was estimated at more than €7,000, including a variety of pork and chicken products.

Shoplifting incidents like these draw attention to the ongoing challenges faced by both retailers and individuals in difficult economic situations.
